HTML5 vs. Native Mobile Apps

HTML5 and its sister CSS3 and JavaScript web technologies are reshaping the way applications can be delivered to the mobile browser. Accessing device hardware such as the GPS unit, or storing application code locally are both examples of the many features HTML5-capable browsers can perform which were never possible in older browsers.  The line between native apps and browser apps are beginning to blur.

In regions such as North America and the US, smartphones with browsers supporting HTML5 are reckoned to comprise over 50% of the mobile marketplace, and with many smartphone devices becoming more affordable this share is increasing quickly around the globe.  Supporting HTML5 as part of your mobile strategy, therefore, is not a question of whether but a question of how?

As a business entertaining perhaps a brand new mobile approach or enhancing an existing one, understanding the capabilities of HTML5 - how it works, differences in features and functionality from a native application approach and a discussion on how to get best coverage for your customers - is important in evaluating your approach today and how best to adapt to, and take advantage of,  changes in the marketplace over the next few years.
