Progressive Web Apps Simplified--All You Need to Know

Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) are all the rage these days, leaving some people wondering what exactly are they, and how do they go about creating them. Faizan Khalidi, Sr. Director of Product Management at Kony, recently participated in Integration Development News’ Architecture Application Summit, during which he simplified PWAs.

According to Khalidi, “at the most basic level, Progressive Web Apps are web apps on steroids that combine the features of a traditional web app with the performance and experience of native apps.

“Diving a little deeper, they are a set of guidelines, technologies, design concepts, and web APIs that work in tandem to provide an app-like experience on the web.”

Even better? These apps work everywhere.

If that isn’t enough for you, and you’re still asking yourself “Why Progressive Web Apps?” here are some reasons:

  • Because of the importance/rise of responsive mobile, tablet, and desktop
  • They provide an experience like native apps
  • PWAs quickly launch from the user’s home screen
  • Instant access via offline cache
  • They’re great for user engagement (for example, you can use push notifications with them)
  • No App Store submission
  • They’re secure and performant (in fact, PWAs are more secure than traditional/native apps)
