The announcement by numerous vendors that they will discontinue use of Apple Pay, Apple’s payment option, shows just how the mobile payments landscape is on shifting sands. People use many different types of contactless payment systems and mobile payments today. So, the problem isn’t the technology, but a question of competition. From Coca Cola to Exxon, mobile banking and contactless payments have been attempted with some success. However, a single retailer can’t grow market acceptance in a world where there is a needed cooperation of banks and potential payment providers to create a viable solution.

As usual, the hype surrounding yesterday’s Apple announcement was deafening (I’m reminded of Lebron James’ “The Decision” announcement.) There were weeks and weeks of speculation as to what might be debuted, but unlike previous Apple events, the world wasn’t quite sure what Apple would announce. This was perhaps the most uncertain and mystery-filled announcement since the 2010 iPad launch.
